Seatwork Assignments

Dear Mustang Parents,

I just wanted to inform you a little bit about my grading policy.  I am sure you are seeing different worksheets with a star, smiley face, or a check mark.  Each symbol means something different.  I wanted to share with you how I grade seatwork assignments.

These are an opportunity to practice new skills, and are often teacher-guided. This week I just checked that they did the work but next week I will rate their work.  A “star” on your child’s paper means he/she understood the concept(s) and was able to work independently after practicing the skill in a large or small group setting. A “smiley face” indicates your child needed some one-on-one support, but seems to grasp the concept fairly well. A “check” means that your child needed one-on-one support with most of the assignment. Please review assignments with smiley faces and/or checks and practice the skill(s) at home. Students will receive extra help at school with these concepts as well. When an assignment has a star, smiley face, or check on it this means it will not count toward your child’s academic grade on his/her report card.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thank you for your continued support,

Erin Devlin

Looking into this week!

Dear Parents,

In class we have been working hard memorizing our doubles facts.  It is important that you also practice this skill at home.  This way when we are doing doubles plus one and doubles minus one your child will understand the new material better.  The first step is knowing the doubles.  I would recommend writing doubles on the front of an index card and the answer one the back.  For example, 1 + 1 on the front and the answer on the back.  Quiz your child every night and they will be very successful in the skill. Practice doubles all the way up to 10 + 10.

The homework math packet is due on Friday, we slowed down this week to provide extra time and practice for doubles facts.

This week we are also working on the short e sound and learning about nouns and when to include commas in our writing.

Also I wanted to remind everyone that conferences are mandatory.  I will be sending dates and times home soon.  Please sign up for a date and time that you are available and I will work hard to accommodate everyone with their various schedules.

Don't forget to send in your activity fees.  The first field trip is at the end of this month!

Thank you for your support,

Erin Devlin

Activity Fee Reminder

Friendly Reminder:

Part of our curriculum includes field trips and other activities that require a fee.
We decided it would be a lot easier to ask for a one-time student fee of $40 to cover the expenses of these school related activities.  Please pay by cash or check (made out to W.T. Moore Elementary School).  We understand that $40 is a lot to ask at one time.  If you are not able to pay the $40 at one time, we have set up installment dates.  The first half ($20) of the fee is due by Friday, September 26th.  The second half ($20) of the fee is due by Wednesday, October 29th.  Please be sure the activity fee is paid in full by October 29th.  This fee covers many things and we don’t want your child to miss out on.

Your Activity Fee money will pay for:
Fall and Spring field trips (venue and bus costs)
Scholastic Weekly Readers
B.E.E. Folders
End of the Year rewards and celebrations

Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter.  As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Spelling and Sight Words

Students will have a spelling and sight word quiz every Friday. Please help your student develop good study habits by practicing these words throughout the week. Neat handwriting and correct letter formation should be practiced for the spelling quiz. Students should be able to read the sight words fluently. The quiz will be a combined score out of 20 that will be averaged toward your child’s Language Arts grade. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Field Trip

We are excited about our second semester field trip to the Tallahassee Junior Museum! Our trip will be Wednesday, April 2nd.  We will arrive at the Museum around 10 am and leave at 1 pm. We will have lunch and recess on site.
First grade will split into two groups. One group will begin exploring Florida’s natural habitat and the animals that we can find throughout Florida. Our second group will begin exploring and discussing schools, stores, and Florida living from long ago. After lunch the groups will switch activities and continue to explore!
Please remember, like all field trips, to send a bag lunch full of healthy options. Make sure everything is disposable because students will not be able to bring anything back to school.
This field trip is exciting for us all because it’s interactive at every turn and allows for amazing discussions on site and back at school.
We look forward to another fun-filled, successful field trip full of learning and inquiry.

Save the Date

It’s time for our annual Rainforest Show! Each year, our first grade children put together and practice parts for a performance on The Rainforest. This play is an additional, exciting way to study The Rainforest. Our students learn songs and poems about different animals found in the rainforest, as well as practice for speaking parts in the show. It takes a lot of work and dedication of both teachers and students, but through it all, the students are so proud of their production!

Each student has been asked by Mrs. Mason to bring in a pair of sunglasses for the “Recycle Rap”. Please send in the sunglasses no later than Monday the 10th.

Their performance is on Thursday, March 13th at 7:00 pm in our cafeteria. Students need to report to their classroom promptly at 6:30. Students will wear jeans and a plain shirt, either yellow or green. We are looking forward to seeing each one of you there, so that we can all share in our children’s success!

Homework Help

Our students are working hard on how to understand the concept of ones and tens. If your child requires additional help with homework please check out http://www.hmhco.com/GoMathAcademy.
on the left hand side there is a search bar that says keywords. You can always type whatever topic we are learning in this book. For this chapter it would be good to search for Understand Tens and Ones or Make Tens and Ones. Please contact me if you need additional resources fro your child and be on the look out fro additional resources and videos in my flipped learning section.
