Seatwork Assignments

Dear Mustang Parents,

I just wanted to inform you a little bit about my grading policy.  I am sure you are seeing different worksheets with a star, smiley face, or a check mark.  Each symbol means something different.  I wanted to share with you how I grade seatwork assignments.

These are an opportunity to practice new skills, and are often teacher-guided. This week I just checked that they did the work but next week I will rate their work.  A “star” on your child’s paper means he/she understood the concept(s) and was able to work independently after practicing the skill in a large or small group setting. A “smiley face” indicates your child needed some one-on-one support, but seems to grasp the concept fairly well. A “check” means that your child needed one-on-one support with most of the assignment. Please review assignments with smiley faces and/or checks and practice the skill(s) at home. Students will receive extra help at school with these concepts as well. When an assignment has a star, smiley face, or check on it this means it will not count toward your child’s academic grade on his/her report card.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thank you for your continued support,

Erin Devlin

Looking into this week!

Dear Parents,

In class we have been working hard memorizing our doubles facts.  It is important that you also practice this skill at home.  This way when we are doing doubles plus one and doubles minus one your child will understand the new material better.  The first step is knowing the doubles.  I would recommend writing doubles on the front of an index card and the answer one the back.  For example, 1 + 1 on the front and the answer on the back.  Quiz your child every night and they will be very successful in the skill. Practice doubles all the way up to 10 + 10.

The homework math packet is due on Friday, we slowed down this week to provide extra time and practice for doubles facts.

This week we are also working on the short e sound and learning about nouns and when to include commas in our writing.

Also I wanted to remind everyone that conferences are mandatory.  I will be sending dates and times home soon.  Please sign up for a date and time that you are available and I will work hard to accommodate everyone with their various schedules.

Don't forget to send in your activity fees.  The first field trip is at the end of this month!

Thank you for your support,

Erin Devlin
